I love the work the guys do over at Invisible Creature. And typically I’m not a big scary movie fan, but now that halloween is approaching, and after working on several halloween themed projects this past month, i can help but to be drawn to do the illustrations the guys created for EMP’s Can’t Look Away horror film exhibit. You can see more photos on their site here

In other news, I moved this past Friday. I cannot wait until everything is set up. Will post pictures when I’ve finally unpacked (which, admittedly…may be a while……). Also for anyone that is moving in the Chicago area, may I strongly recommend Stefan Koev at Koev’s Moving. It was a rather hectic start due to unfortunate circumstances, but these guys had such an amazing attitude and were FAST. When we got to my new place, I took care of some paper work with the building manager while the guys unloaded. We could see the guys work from the huge screen in her office which showed what all the security cameras were catching (big brother…) and several times while we were talking she stopped and said “wow. your guys are seriously fast.” heck yes. So yeah, what should have been a rather stressful day ended on an extremely positive note. I even had energy to go grab some honky tonk and a cold milk stout with eric to celebrate.

I know. it’s been forever. shame shame, shame on me. but much has happened, which includes stepping out of the world of non-profits and freelancing and into the world of health insurance and 401k’s. I work for a company that runs reward programs for other companies, as well as our own dining program, called iDine. We recently worked up a new campaign to push iDine. It was a pretty fun experience, particularly brainstorming. Especially when half of my team mates are improv guys, who perform and teach at places like Improv Olympics and Second City. So needless to say, I basically had free entertainment for two weeks. We’re currently putting on the final bits to where we landed, but I thought I’d post some of my proposals that didn’t get chosen (to my pure and utter gut wrenching dismay. haha jk. or am i…..haha no i’m really just kidding) anyway, hope you like them!

IHOP–KC bookstore promo card

So I recently started designing again at IHOP–KC. It’s been wildly intimidating. Sometimes I can’t help but pay some attention to the nagging thoughts of “you’re not as good as you thought you were.” But at the end of the day it’s still been fun. It’s this combination of discovering all these new things that i never got a chance to get into, and also realizing that i do know more than i had originally assumed. =)

One of my first projects going into my new (old?) job was a business card sized promo card for our new online bookstore. I hope you like it!

it hasn’t even been 48 hours and my cheeks and stomach are literally sore from smiling and laughing so much. it’s so great to be around people who are like family, friends, and comrades all rolled into one.

this is caitlyn, who is as cute as can be. mixed kids are the cutest. and usually it’s a white guy with an asian girl, but this time it’s an asian guy with a white girl. we’re pretty proud of Chris.

old artist statement

I’ve been going through an old journal, and it’s weird.

i was a totally different person. On some aspects, i miss that person. old jane thought she could change the world.

Anyway, here’s my old artist statement. i need to update it. =)

Ultimately, that is the reason why I do anything creative—to remain sane. Starting off as a big fat crybaby, I did not handle life very well. Anything and everything set me off. Jerk boy in class called me stupid, I cried mourning over my stupidity. My mom said that I couldn’t have another Barbie doll because I already had six, and I cried because I wanted seven. People told me that I cried too much, and I bit my lip fighting back tears, but ended up crying anyways because I bit my lip too hard. Eventually the waterworks stopped, but the emotions didn’t. I couldn’t understand why I seemed to have a harder time handling situations, nor did I know what to do. When someone would ask me what was wrong, I would give a vague answer. Not because I didn’t want to talk, but because I didn’t have the words to describe the unsettling feeling which seemed to have made a permanent home. Sometime in sixth grade, I was introduced to the band Gravity Kills. I’m still not quite sure how I was introduced, but I remember the first time I listened to their cd. I was doing math homework, polishing my multiplication skills when the words “I face the change, I’ve tasted pain, digging a hole, now take the blame. I fell aside, I cast away, covered in shame, now take the blame” interrupted my concentration. There was something about the moment that felt so comfortable. Even though the lyrics didn’t exactly describe how I felt, there was something about the combination of the angst in his voice, and intensity of the instruments that communicated to where words don’t belong. Initially I thought it was just this song. Then the conclusion was that this band was able to create that effect. Eventually it was discovered that not only was music, as a whole, was able to correspond to my depths, but also images, videos, and sculpture. A couple years later God ravished my heart. As my obsession grew, it became harder to find music or art that could pinpoint what the back of my throat wanted to scream. My pastor encouraged me to start writing my own songs. The lyrics were overly vague, and eventually I would find that my chord progressions were the same progressions for several other hundred songs, but that was hardly an issue for me. It was refreshing to just have something else in the world that knew exactly what was going on inside, even if it was something I produced myself. Most of the works I do are overly personal, and if someone were to ask me how, I would not be able to give them a response that allowed for comprehension. Looking over what I have produced, a good 75% refers to God in some manner. It’s not an obligation of any sort, but because He’s what prods me toward insanity. Sometimes it’s His love that blows me out of proportion, and other times it’s my inability to understand why things happen the way they do. At the end of the day, having God in my life rips logic apart and being able to translate that into physical material keeps me from going something something.

i have no idea who is involved in this amazing track. a friend from college had sent this to me after finding it on some obscure website. we tried to figure out who was on the recording, but alas, no names. so all we could do was listen to this recording over and over, allowing our jaws to slowly drop.
