How much does an abortion cost in Ohio?
How much does an abortion cost in Ohio?
The cost of an abortion in Ohio depends on where you go and whether you use insurance. In 2021, the average cost of a medication abortion (with abortion pills) was $650, but it can be lower with insurance or through a telehealth provider like Hey Jane.
Procedural abortions, sometimes called surgical abortions, generally cost more than medication abortions done with abortion pills. While you can get abortion pills in-person at a local clinic, it can often be pricier than telehealth options where you can consult with a provider with a quick message, phone, or video call and have pills mailed to you.
Cost isn’t the only factor to consider when choosing an abortion method, so it’s important to explore all options.

What you need to know about Ohio abortion laws
Ohio abortion laws are constantly evolving. Stay up to date on the latest.
Ohio constitutional amendment
In 2023, Ohio voters approved Issue 1, an amendment to their state constitution that protects reproductive decision-making—including abortion. Later that year, a state court ruled that Issue 1 getting passed meant that the Ohio Heartbeat Law was unconstitutional.
Ohio heartbeat bill ruled unconstitutional
The Ohio Heartbeat Law aimed to restrict abortion after a fetal heartbeat was detectable (usually around 6 weeks into a pregnancy) after Roe was overturned in 2022 by the Supreme Court. In 2023 a state court judge ruled the law unconstitutional and it can no longer be enforced.
How late can you get an abortion in Ohio?
You can get a prescription for abortion pills, a combination of mifepristone and misoprostol, up to 10 weeks after the first day of your last menstrual period.
If your pregnancy is further along than that, you can get an in-clinic procedural abortion until about 22 weeks of pregnancy (Ohio law says 20 weeks post-fertilization, which translates to 22 weeks after the first day of your last menstrual period).
Sometimes called surgical abortions, these in-clinic abortions involve a very safe procedure where pregnancy tissue is gently suctioned out of your uterus. It is typically a short procedure, and you’ll get some form of anesthetic so that you don’t feel any pain during the appointment.
Beyond that, Ohio does not allow you to get an abortion unless your life or health is at risk.
Who can get an abortion in Ohio?
Anyone with a uterus can get an abortion in Ohio until about 22 weeks of pregnancy. Technically, Ohio law states that abortion is restricted once the pregnancy is likely more than 20 weeks post-fertilization, which refers to a gestational age of 22 weeks.
- People who live in Ohio or travel to Ohio from another state
- College students
- Undocumented immigrants
Minors under 18 years old are able to receive abortion care. While Ohio requires permission from a parent, a step-parent, grandparent, or sibling age 21 or older for a minor to receive an abortion, a judge can waive this requirement.
The abortion pill explained
The abortion pill is actually two medications taken separately: mifepristone (stops the pregnancy from growing) and misoprostol (causes cramping and bleeding to empty the uterus).
The first medication (mifepristone) usually causes no side effects and you can go about your normal routine. When it comes to the second medication, misoprostol, most patients prefer to do this step at home where they can rest and have access to a private bathroom due to the stronger cramps and heavier bleeding.
The majority of abortions performed in the US are medication abortions, but only 54% of people know about this option. Despite baseless lawsuits you may have seen in the news, abortion pills are extremely safe, and these misleading cases only serve to further confuse people.
Abortion pills are safe and very effective
Mifepristone and misoprostol are very safe and over 99% effective at ending an early pregnancy when taken correctly.
Abortion pills do not affect future fertility—including your chances of getting pregnant, staying pregnant, or developing birth defects in a future pregnancy. In fact, you can get pregnant almost immediately after having an abortion.
Studies are clear that having an abortion does not increase your risk for breast cancer and does not cause depression. In fact, abortion pills are safer than popular medicines like Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Viagra (sildenafil).
How to find an abortion clinic in Ohio
If you’re less than 10 weeks pregnant, you can get abortion care with Hey Jane. If you’re more than 10 weeks pregnant, or prefer to get an abortion in-person, there are some factors to keep in mind when searching for the right clinic for you
- Confirm how far along your pregnancy is by counting how many weeks have passed since your last menstrual period. Some clinics only offer abortion procedures up until a certain point in pregnancy, so you’ll want to call to confirm that you’re eligible before scheduling.
- You may also want to consider the cost of an abortion in Ohio, which is different for medication versus procedural. Additional costs to consider include transportation, time off work, childcare, etc.
- Be cautious of fake clinics (also called “crisis pregnancy centers”) that try to prevent people from getting abortions. These clinics often look legit online and in-person, but are generally not able to provide medical care and are funded by anti-choice organizations. Horrible, we know. INeedAnA.com has a helpful search tool for locating real abortion clinics.
Abortion in Ohio is safe and legal
Abortion is a basic health care need. About 1 in 4 people with a uterus will have one in their lifetime. Right now, you can get an abortion in Ohio for any reason until about 22 weeks of pregnancy (or 20 weeks post-fertilization per Ohio law, which is typically considered to be 22 weeks after the first day of your last menstrual period). After that, abortion is only allowed if the pregnant person’s life or health is at risk.
