Related FAQs

I'm on someone else's insurance. Will they find out that I got care with Hey Jane?

As part of regular health insurance communications, your insurance company sends some of your confidential health information—like the services you received, when you received them, the charges for those services, and the amount covered by your plan,—to the policyholder of your health plan. However, we won’t ever discuss your treatment with your partner, parent, or anyone else without your written authorization.

Can I use insurance with Hey Jane?

Yes, and using insurance can bring treatment costs as low as $0! Hey Jane is proud to be the first 100% virtual abortion clinic to accept insurance. We are constantly adding insurance options (including Medicaid coverage) to help patients access affordable care. See if your insurance is accepted here.

If you use insurance to pay for any of our services, you will be prompted to enter your insurance information at checkout after completing our online intake form. Our team will help you understand your expected coverage and costs in Spruce, our secure messaging app that you’ll download after checkout.

You may also be able to use your HSA/FSA funds to pay for treatment. Simply enter your HSA/FSA card details at checkout the way you would with a debit card.

What is a co-pay?

A co-pay is a flat fee that you owe up-front each time you go to your doctor or fill a prescription. Co-pays are typically printed on your insurance ID card. Not all plans use co-pays, and most plans use both co-pays and other forms of cost-sharing like deductibles or coinsurance. Some services may even be covered at no cost to you, it all depends on the specifics of your plan.

What insurance plans does Hey Jane accept, and when will more plans be accepted?

Hey Jane accepts the insurance plans and Medicaid programs for select services and treatment in states listed here. We are actively working on expanding our insurance coverage to more plans, states, and services.

Why is Hey Jane out-of-network with my insurance plan?

If you have a plan listed on our Insurance page, you may need to check for “Possible Health” or “Jane Medical”, which are the names of the Hey Jane provider groups. If we do not accept your insurance plan, Hey Jane would be considered an out-of-network provider. We are actively working to expand our coverage.

What is a deductible?

A deductible is the amount you pay annually for most eligible medication services or prescriptions before your health plan begins to pay for covered services.

For example, if you have a $1000 annual deductible, you must pay the first $1000 of your eligible medical costs before your plan helps to pay. You can check your health insurance plan account online or by phone to make sure you know how much of your deductible you've paid.

How long will it take for my claim to be processed?

It can take up to 90 days for your private insurance claim to process, and up to 12 months for Medicaid claims.

Do I need insurance to receive treatment from Hey Jane?

No, insurance coverage is not required to get care with Hey Jane.  If we don’t accept your insurance plan yet, you don’t have insurance, or don’t want to use insurance to pay for care, you can pay with one of the following methods:

Credit or debit card

  • Enter your card details or use Apple Pay at checkout.

Cash App

  • Pay quickly and discreetly with Cash App, a flexible digital payment option that doesn't require a bank account.

Medicaid

  • Abortion care through Hey Jane  is covered by Illinois Medicaid.

FSA/HSA funds

  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and Health Savings Accounts (HSA) can help you save money while using pre-tax funds you've already set aside for healthcare expenses. Confirm your FSA/HSA covers your abortion care and enter your FSA or HSA card details at checkout, just as you would with a debit card.

Financial assistance (for abortion care only)

  • You can request financial assistance from one of our abortion fund partners here. If eligible, you will receive a discount code that you can apply during checkout with Hey Jane
  • Abortion funds provide financial assistance for people seeking abortions and can cover up to 100% of treatment costs. Traveling for an abortion? Funds can help with those costs too!
Does Hey Jane accept Medicaid?

Yes, we currently accept Illinois Medicaid for medication abortion care provided to Illinois Medicaid members located within Illinois at the time of service. We are actively working on expanding our Medicaid coverage.

If patients without coverage need financial assistance in addition to our income-based sliding scale pricing, we partner with abortion funds to cover the cost of treatment, travel, and/or accommodations.

What exactly is covered when paying with insurance?

Medication abortion

After submitting your online intake form, you'll have a virtual evaluation with one of our providers via phone or video call*. If eligible for treatment**, you will receive your medications by mail in a discreet envelope to protect your privacy.

  • Treatment with Hey Jane includes:
  • Abortion pills (mifepristone and misoprostol)
  • Anti-nausea (ondansetron) and pain medicines (ibuprofen or Tylenol)
  • 2 at-home pregnancy tests
  • Illustrated treatment guide
  • Unlimited chat support during your treatment
  • 24/7 urgent clinical support number
  • Private peer-to-peer community forum

*Patients using certain insurance such as Medicaid are required to have a video consultation. Non-Medicaid patients can add these on at checkout for a small fee.

**In rare cases, additional testing such as bloodwork or an ultrasound may be necessary before treatment. Your provider will order these to a local clinic if you wish to proceed.

All other services (birth control, emergency contraception, and infections care)

Whether paying with cash or via insurance, your transaction covers the cost of your medical evaluation with one of our providers. This fee accounts for labor and the cost of writing the prescription, but it does not cover the cost of medication. The cost of medication will be paid directly to your local pharmacy when you pick up your prescription. Your out-of-pocket costs for medication with cash or insurance can be as low as $0, but cost varies by insurance coverage and other factors.

Am I responsible for any payments if using insurance?

You will need to check with your benefits provider to learn if you are responsible for any payment for medication abortion services, such as a deductible, copay, or coinsurance. For patients using Illinois Medicaid: Most patients will not owe any fees, but if you do, you will be billed directly to you by your Medicaid program.
