I just started having sex with a new partner and I’ve noticed a fishy smell coming from my groin area. It’s so embarrassing and I feel like I don’t even want to have sex because of it anymore.

Hey there! It sounds like this could be bacterial vaginosis. This is a common thing that can happen with new partners and when the normal bacteria in the vagina is disturbed. I know it can be really upsetting but I want to reassure you that it doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you. The good news is that there are meds we can prescribe to help restore your natural balance!

What form of the "morning-after" pill is right for me?

Emergency contraception can be used to prevent a pregnancy after having unprotected sex. It is often referred to as the morning-after pill, though this term is misleading as you can take the medication up to 3-5 days after unprotected sex, depending on the specific treatment you take. It is not the abortion pill, which ends an existing pregnancy. Learn more about the two types of emergency contraception pills Hey Jane offers below.

What is bacterial vaginosis (BV)?

BV is the most common vaginal infection our providers see among patients. It's caused when the balance of "good" bacteria in your vagina is disrupted, and can be a recurring, and frustrating, issue for many people.

What are symptoms of BV?

  • Thin, white, or gray vaginal discharge
  • Unusual vaginal odor
  • Itchiness around the vaginal opening
  • Burning during urination

Get rid of bacterial vaginosis with these remedies

The most commonly prescribed antibiotic pills for BV are:

  • Tinidazole: Tinidazole is an oral antibiotic similar to metronidazole that treats bacterial vaginosis by targeting anaerobic bacteria responsible for the infection.
  • Metronidazole: Metronidazole is an antibiotic commonly prescribed as a pill or gel to effectively treat bacterial vaginosis by targeting anaerobic bacteria.
  • Secnidazole (Solosec®): Secnidazole is a single-dose oral antibiotic that treats bacterial vaginosis by disrupting the DNA of harmful bacteria in the vagina.
  • Clindamycin: Clindamycin is an antibiotic available as a cream or oral pill that combats bacterial vaginosis by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis.

Topical treatments are also available, like metronidazole gel or vaginal suppositories, that you can use directly on or in the affected area.

After you fill out our intake form on your phone or computer, your Hey Jane provider will evaluate the whole picture. They’ll connect the dots to confirm your BV diagnosis and provide a range of treatment options that address both your lifestyle and medical needs. This includes discussing your history of prior infections, your current symptoms, and what has or hasn’t worked well for you in the past.
