As the upcoming election on November 5, 2024 rapidly approaches, your access to abortion care and reproductive choice may be front of mind, among the sea of critical ballot items. The choices we make at the polls have a direct impact on our access to safe and legal abortion, but the aspects of reproductive freedom that are out of our own control may be even more distressing. At Hey Jane, we're committed to supporting every person’s right to abortion care, contraception, and more, no matter the outcome of this election. Here are some tips to help you take care of yourself—physically and mentally—as you navigate this election season.

1. Prepare to for the polls

Make sure you’re prepared by registering to vote and confirming your registration status. If you’re voting by mail, request your ballot early and track it to ensure your vote is counted. If you’re voting in person, know your polling place, and what identification may be required. By planning ahead, you can ensure your voice is heard and your rights are defended.

You can do all of this here.

2. Educate yourself on the ballot

Take the time to educate yourself on the ballot so you’re not faced with last-minute choices at the polls. Learn where candidates stand on access to abortion, contraception, and other issues that are important to you. Remember, local elections play a crucial role in determining the policies that will affect your daily life, including your access to essential health care services. An informed vote is a powerful vote.

Our 2024 voter guide outlines key ballot measures and races at federal and state levels. If voting in-person, you might find it helpful to write your ballot decisions down on paper and bring it with you to the polls to reference as you make your selections.

3. Encourage friends and family to vote

Your voice is vital, but it becomes even more powerful when you mobilize those around you. Talk to your friends and family about the importance of voting with reproductive choice for all in mind. Share resources, engage in meaningful conversations, and encourage them to cast their ballots for candidates who will protect and expand access to abortion, gender-affirming care, and other essential healthcare services. Collective action can drive the change we need to see.

Your friends and family can register to vote, look up their poll site, request a mail-in ballot, and more here.

4. Have an abortion access plan in place

With recent shifts in the political landscape, it’s essential to have an abortion access plan in place, particularly if changes occur in your state after the election. Know your options and resources, whether that means understanding the laws in neighboring states, familiarizing yourself with telehealth services like those offered by Hey Jane, or identifying trusted organizations that can provide support. Planning ahead ensures that you have the information and resources you need to access safe and legal abortion care, no matter what the future holds. You may also want to consider stocking up on emergency contraception now—you can get contraceptives like Plan B or Ella before you need them and keep them in your medicine cabinet for future use.

5. Preparing for changes in access to gender-affirming care

If you're worried about losing access to gender-affirming care after the election, you can take proactive steps to have a plan in place for continuing to access life-saving care. Similar to preparing for abortion access no matter the election outcome, start by familiarizing yourself with the current laws and regulations in your state, as well as potential changes that could come depending on election outcomes. Consider securing your care by scheduling appointments or refilling prescriptions ahead of time. It might also be helpful to identify alternative resources or providers, including those in nearby states or telehealth options. No matter who’s in office, your health and identity are valid, and Hey Jane stands with you through any challenges that arise.

6. Practice self care

The constant news cycle and election-related stress can take a toll on your mental and emotional well-being. Set boundaries with media consumption, take breaks, and engage in activities that nourish your mind and body. Whether it’s spending time with loved ones, reading a good book, practicing mindfulness, or simply resting, remember that taking care of yourself is a radical act of preservation and resistance in challenging times.

7. Build your community

You don’t have to navigate this election season alone. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, reach out for support—whether it's talking to a friend, a therapist, or joining a community group. Consider connecting with community affinity groups that offer safe spaces, frequenting establishments that you know are queer and POC affirming, and volunteering with organizations that support causes near and dear to you for solidarity and support.

By staying informed, encouraging others to vote, and taking care of yourself, you’re contributing to a movement that values and protects our autonomy. Hey Jane is here to support you and secure your access to critical reproductive care. Take care of yourself this election season—your voice and your well-being matter.
