Cost of treatment
The cost of treatment with Hey Jane will vary depending on what services your receive and how you pay. There are a few ways to pay for care: with insurance (including Illinois Medicaid) or self-pay.
Pay through insurance: If you use your insurance, our team will help you understand your expected coverage and costs. We currently select insurance plans and HSA/FSA funds, and are actively working on expanding our coverage.
Get sliding-scale pricing: If paying out-of-pocket, your treatment price is determined by your annual income. Sliding scale pricing is available for all Hey Jane services, and can be paid with debit or debit card, Cash App, and some HSA/FSA funds. Additional financial assistance is available for medication abortion patients from our abortion fund partners.
Occasionally for medication abortion care, a sonogram or lab work may be needed to ensure that treatment with Hey Jane is right for you or for diagnostic purposes following your treatment. While not available through Hey Jane, we'll walk you through obtaining care and provide transparency on your options every step of the way.
The cost of your birth control consultation with Hey Jane will vary depending on how you pay. There are two ways to pay for care: with insurance or self-pay.
We accept select insurance plans for birth control consultations and offer cash-pay patients income-based sliding scale pricing. Insurance
As part of regular health insurance communications, your insurance company sends some of your confidential health information—like the services you received, when you received them, the charges for those services, and the amount covered by your plan,—to the policyholder of your health plan. However, we won’t ever discuss your treatment with your partner, parent, or anyone else without your written authorization.
Yes, and using insurance can bring treatment costs as low as $0! Hey Jane is proud to be the first 100% virtual abortion clinic to accept insurance. We are constantly adding insurance options (including Medicaid coverage) to help patients access affordable care. See if your insurance is accepted here.
If you use insurance to pay for any of our services, you will be prompted to enter your insurance information at checkout after completing our online intake form. Our team will help you understand your expected coverage and costs in Spruce, our secure messaging app that you’ll download after checkout.
You may also be able to use your HSA/FSA funds to pay for treatment. Simply enter your HSA/FSA card details at checkout the way you would with a debit card.
A co-pay is a flat fee that you owe up-front each time you go to your doctor or fill a prescription. Co-pays are typically printed on your insurance ID card. Not all plans use co-pays, and most plans use both co-pays and other forms of cost-sharing like deductibles or coinsurance. Some services may even be covered at no cost to you, it all depends on the specifics of your plan.
Hey Jane accepts the insurance plans and Medicaid programs for select services and treatment in states listed here. We are actively working on expanding our insurance coverage to more plans, states, and services.
If you have a plan listed on our Insurance page, you may need to check for “Possible Health” or “Jane Medical”, which are the names of the Hey Jane provider groups. If we do not accept your insurance plan, Hey Jane would be considered an out-of-network provider. We are actively working to expand our coverage.
A deductible is the amount you pay annually for most eligible medication services or prescriptions before your health plan begins to pay for covered services.
For example, if you have a $1000 annual deductible, you must pay the first $1000 of your eligible medical costs before your plan helps to pay. You can check your health insurance plan account online or by phone to make sure you know how much of your deductible you've paid.
It can take up to 90 days for your private insurance claim to process, and up to 12 months for Medicaid claims.

Whether paying with cash or via insurance, your transaction covers the cost of your medical evaluation with one of our providers. This fee accounts for labor and the cost of writing the prescription, but it does not cover the cost of medication. The cost of medication will be paid directly to your local pharmacy when you pick up your prescription. Your out-of-pocket costs for medication with cash or insurance can be as low as $0, but cost varies by insurance coverage and other factors.
You will need to check with your benefits provider to learn if you are responsible for any payment for medication abortion services, such as a deductible, copay, or coinsurance. For patients using Illinois Medicaid: Most patients will not owe any fees, but if you do, you will be billed directly to you by your Medicaid program.
Financial assistance
Hey Jane has a sliding-scale for all services that determines pricing based on your annual income.
If you need additional financial assistance for the cost of abortion treatment with Hey Jane, our abortion fund partners can provide a discount code to help cover the cost of care if eligible. Abortion funds can cover the cost of treatment as well as travel or accommodations if you need them to access care with Hey Jane. Another way to reduce the cost of treatment is by using private insurance or Illinois Medicaid, which can reduce your out-of-pocket cost to as low as $0. See if your plan is accepted here.
While each abortion fund operates a bit differently, the process typically starts with filling out a quick form online or calling the fund to request assistance. In addition to treatment costs, you can inquire about support with local transportation, long-distance travel, lodging, meals, and even childcare if needed to support you during an abortion.
After they gather details about your situation, they'll let you know whether you are eligible for funding and how much they will cover. This process can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few days depending on what hours the fund is open and reviewing requests, and how many requests they receive each day. If eligible for funding, the abortion fund will provide a code that you can use at checkout with Hey Jane.
Sliding scale pricing is available for all Hey Jane services, and determines your price based on your personal and financial circumstances. At this time, we accept payment via:
- Credit or debit card
- Apple Pay or Google Pay
- Cash App
- Private insurance and Illinois Medicaid
- Some HSA and FSA funds
